Salt Dough Scenery

Looking for an easy sculpture lesson to do at home, but you don't have clay?  No prob!  This salt dough recipe is super simple, and it can be used in many ways to create different types of art, not just with this project.  Here's my little art example....you'll need flour, water, salt, cardboard, and something to use when coloring the dough.

First to make the dough... one batch is 1/4 cup of salt

1/2 cup of flour

and 1/4 cup of water

Mix it up, and voila!

For this particular lesson, I chose to create an ocean scene.  If you would rather portray a different kind of scene, like a room, or your own backyard, feel free!  To make the sand, all I did was roll little "worms" of the dough, and then push down.

While the dough is wet, it may stick to the board, but as it dries it will loosen, so you will need to glue your sculptural pieces down later on.

To create texture for the sand, fish, and seaweed, all I did was press in with different parts of a pencil tip.  You could try creating other textures in other ways, as well, using things like a fork, or your own fingertips.

After the salt dough dries (it will probably take about a day), you can glue down your pieces and paint or color them...

If you don't have flour or salt to create this dough, you can use play doh, model magic, or simply create a drawing/painting of one of your favorite places.  I hope you have a great time creating some sculptures!  I look forward to seeing them soon.
