Different Point of View

Hi there, 4th graders (and everyone else who wants to draw)...today we will be talking about the element of SPACE in art.  When we discuss space as an art element, what we really mean is "how do you use the space on your paper to draw something?

Do you draw it small and far away? Big and close up?  Does it run off the page? Does your object take up a lot of space on the paper, or a little?

The size and placement of your object will make it seem like the object is closer, further, above, or below you.

For this lesson, you'll be choosing an object and drawing it from 4 different points of view.

First....how do you choose your object?  My suggestion is to choose something with interesting details.  Also, choose something you LIKE because you're going to be drawing it four times.  You could draw something in your house or outside.

I chose my favorite lamp at home.  I love how intricate and delicate the pieces of glass are.

Once you've got your object picked out, time to get your paper ready.  I used a bigger piece for this, but use whatever you've got.  The paper (I think) works better if it is square, but I suppose it really depends on the shape of your object.  If you want to make a square out of your paper, you can measure with a ruler or watch this video to try a different way.

Fold in half in each direction, and draw lines to create four equal boxes, like this:

Think about your four points of view.  Will you draw from a bird's eye view (this means "from above") your object?  Will you draw from a worm's eye view (this means...you guessed it... "from below") your object?  From close up?  From far away?

Be sure to try four very different perspectives...

Try to capture some of whatever is around your object in the square, too.

Ok....when you've finished we'll be coloring.  As always, color with whatever you have available. My suggestion is to use colored pencils for this if you have them, only because of allllll thooooooose littttttttle deeeeeeetails.

I hope you learned something new about PERSPECTIVE, and SPACE, as it pertains to art.  Have an awesome day!
