Wooooooo!! Fun, fun! Who doesn't love a good robot lesson? This is a longer lesson that I've been working on with my fourth graders. Day one was totally focused on the intro to the repousse technique. We focused on TEXTURE, both real and implied, and then the kids started on the heads of the robots.
Those who finished early started designing and embossing the bodies. We used dull pencils and popsicle sticks to complete the repousse part of this lesson. Be sure to use magazines or newspaper packets to cushion underneath the metal. I also had students tape each side of the metal for safety reasons.
The following class period was spent finishing up with embossing. After that, students went on a search for different magazine pieces to complete their robots. Some focused on large machinery, while others looked for more technology-based item.
Assembly of the robots was last. We used "BIG, juicy dots" of elmer's or crayola school glue to attach the metal, which worked just fine, and we added gears and tools in the background with silver metallic Sharpies. If students had extra time, I had them use some black tempera on their metal and wipe away the raised areas with a damp cloth. AND VOILA: ROBOT REPOUSSE :)

Until next time...
